I w...The book is Punished by Rewards by Alfie Kohn. I will never think about rewards and incentives the same again. It was very, very eye-opening when I was teaching in a public school (so many rewards there it's sickening), but I still take pause with rewards and incentives at home too. For example, summer reading programs are awesome. I'm so glad they are available. However, I skipped it the last two summers with my kids because reading is its own reward and I don't want to detract from that especially while my son, Thomas, was in that special age of developing, really igniting a love of reading. This is not to say you can't reward kids for reading, but I do think we need to consider anything that robs our kids (or even ourselves) of the insight that ____________ is it's own reward (even hard work!) and that internal motivation is important to develop and is sometimes hard won.
